Bar passageclass of 2025

78.7%first-time−1.1

79.8% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 74 of 94 first-time takers passed

88.1% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating

A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

Essays

  • Personal statementRequiredstart by Feb 22, 2027

The Enrollment Management Committee gives considerable emphasis in its evaluation to the personal statement. The personal statement should provide the Enrollment Management Committee with insights about the applicant and the applicant's interest in pursuing both a legal education and career. The most effective personal statements also typically provide further insight into the applicant's personality, background, professional interests, or matters that are not fully present in other parts of the application.

    Notes & source

Item 2 of nine required materials. NO LENGTH LIMIT IS PUBLISHED at all -- WVU states no page count, no word count, and no formatting, spacing, or font requirement for the personal statement, unlike the resume where it explicitly addresses length. Left unset rather than guessed. The prompt is descriptive rather than a question, and it is notable for what it pushes applicants away from: material 'not fully present in other parts of the application,' which reads as a caution against restating the resume. WVU keeps 'why us' material out of this statement and gives it a separate optional home; see the why_x_essay entry. Reapplicants are told to rewrite rather than resubmit: 'Students reapplying to WVU Law should update their application materials. At a minimum, please update your: Application form; Personal statement; Resume; Academic documents.' Nothing is published about generative AI.

  • Why this schoolOptionalschool-specificstart by Mar 5, 2027

Applicants may use the optional “Why WVU Law?” Statement as an opportunity to express a specific interest in WVU Law. Applicants may also wish to address how their background, experiences, personal character, and/or career aspirations align with the legal education that WVU Law provides and how WVU Law can assist them with both their professional and personal formation.

    Notes & source

WVU's own name for it is the '“Why WVU Law?” Statement' and it is the first of three listed Optional Materials. Optional in the plain sense -- the page neither encourages nor discourages it beyond listing it, and attaches no length limit, formatting rule, or deadline. Worth noting that the required personal statement is pointed elsewhere (at material 'not fully present in other parts of the application'), so at WVU the why-us case has a dedicated home rather than being absorbed into the personal statement, which is the opposite of the arrangement at schools that forbid a separate why-us essay. The admissions overview reinforces that the school reads for it: 'Competitive applicants often highlight their strongest qualifications, articulate their interest in law, and explain how WVU Law will help them achieve their goals.'

  • Perspective statementOptionalstart by Mar 1, 2027

Law schools benefit from enrolling students with a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences that shape how they view the world, approach challenges, and contribute to the academic community. Applicants may use the optional Lived Experiences and Perspectives Statement to share how their personal journey, including any formative experiences, obstacles overcome, distinctive viewpoints, or unique paths to the study of law, might allow them to offer a valuable and original perspective to the entering class.

    Notes & source

WVU calls this the 'Lived Experiences and Perspectives Statement,' the second of three Optional Materials. No length limit, formatting requirement, or further guidance is published, and the school neither encourages nor discourages submitting it. The holistic-review list on the same page names 'Overcoming adversity' among the factors the Enrollment Management Committee may consider, which is the material this statement is built to carry.

  • AddendumOptionalstart by Mar 12, 2027
    Notes & source

Two distinct things on the same page, one optional and one required when triggered, neither with a published length limit. (1) OPTIONAL, the third of three Optional Materials, and unusually broad: 'If there is any additional information the applicant believes would help the Enrollment Management Committee better understand their application, the applicant is welcome to provide that information in an addendum. Common examples of content shared in an addendum include explanations for academic performance or standardized test scores, clarifications about items listed on the applicant's resume, or details regarding the applicant's eligibility for military education benefits.' The transcripts section points here as well: 'Students may address any concerns regarding their coursework or grades in the Addendum section of the application.' (2) REQUIRED WHEN TRIGGERED, character and fitness (item 8 of the required materials): 'If an applicant answers “Yes” to any of the Character and Fitness questions on this application, the applicant must provide a full explanation of the circumstances involved and the resolution to the situation(s) in question. This explanation should be provided in a Character and Fitness Addendum.' WVU imposes a CONTINUING DUTY TO UPDATE that runs past submission and past enrolment, which few schools spell out: an applicant who would newly answer 'Yes' before admission or enrolment 'must immediately notify the Enrollment Management Office regarding the incident' at wvulaw.admissions@mail.wvu.edu with the subject line 'Character and Fitness Update,' and after enrolment the same duty runs to the Academic Program Coordinator. Reapplicants 'must also update any information related to Character and Fitness.'

Letters & documents

  • RésuméRequiredstart by Mar 8, 2027
    Notes & source

Item 3 of nine required materials -- required, not optional. NO PAGE LIMIT IS RECORDED, deliberately: 'There is no page limit for the resume, but 2 pages is typical.' Per docs/CURATION.md that is guidance, not a cap, so page_limit is left unset. Content guidance: 'An applicant's resume should highlight their educational, professional, leadership, and service experiences. The applicant may also wish to highlight honors, awards, or special skills.' WVU publishes no instruction about high school content, references, objectives, or hours-per-week, so none is recorded. Reapplicants must update the resume.

  • Letter of recommendation (1 of 2)Requiredstart by Feb 15, 2027
    Notes & source

Item 4 of nine. 'The Enrollment Management Committee requires applicants to submit 2 letters of recommendation from non-personal connections. However, applicants may submit up to 4 letters of recommendation if desired.' At least one must be academic: 'At least 1 letter of recommendation should come from an individual who instructed the applicant in either an undergraduate or graduate course. The Enrollment Management Committee recognizes that some applicants, especially those who received their bachelor's degree a number of years ago, may have difficulty meeting this request. In such cases, letters from employers, supervisors or others who have worked closely with the applicant are acceptable substitutes.' On content, both required letters 'should come from individuals who can evaluate the applicant's candidacy both in terms of academic skills as well as personal qualities.' A HARD PROCESS GATE worth knowing, which WVU states and most schools do not: 'Applicants are required to use the LSAC Letter of Recommendation Service that is part of the Credential Assembly Service (CAS). LSAC will include these letters with the CAS Report. Please note, LSAC will not release the CAS Report until 2 letters of recommendation have been submitted.' So a missing second letter stalls the entire file, not just the letter requirement. Later letters are still forwarded: 'LSAC will send further CAS Reports if additional recommenders submit letters at a later time.' Reapplicants: 'Letters of recommendation may be reused, but we encourage submitting an additional letter reflecting your most recent work.'

  • LSAT or GRERequiredstart by Jan 14, 2027
    Notes & source

Item 5 of nine, and genuinely either test -- WVU's own heading is 'Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and/or Graduate Record Examination (GRE).' FULL DISCLOSURE OF ALL SCORES IS MANDATORY, with different validity windows per test: 'Applicants must report all valid LSAT scores taken between June 2020 and the present, and all valid GRE scores taken between July 2021 and the present.' Nothing is published about whether the highest or the average score is used. ROUTING DIFFERS BY TEST and the GRE does not travel through LSAC: 'LSAC will provide all LSAT score reports through the CAS Report,' but 'Applicants who have taken the GRE must send their official score reports directly to WVU Law through ETS. The Designation Institution Code (DI Code) for WVU Law is 3926.' FUTURE TESTS PAUSE THE FILE BY DEFAULT, for both tests: 'If an applicant has registered for a future LSAT, LSAC will notify the Enrollment Management Office. The Enrollment Management Committee will hold off on evaluating the applicant's file until the results of that future LSAT are received, unless the applicant specifies otherwise,' and applicants planning a future GRE 'must indicate this on the Standardized Testing section of the application' with the same hold. An applicant who wants to be read now on existing scores has to say so. The 509 corroborates that the GRE path is real but rare: of 114 first-year enrollees, 113 are LSAT admissions enrollees and 1 is a GRE admissions enrollee, with GRE percentiles withheld because the cohort is under the ABA's 10-test-taker publication floor. No JD-Next variance is mentioned anywhere and the 509 prints no JD-Next row. Nothing is published about LSAT Writing as a separate gate, though the CAS Report section notes the report will include 'LSAT writing section(s).'

  • Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by Feb 22, 2027
    Notes & source

Items 6 and 7 of nine. 'WVU Law requires applicants to register with LSAC's Credential Assembly Service (CAS). An applicant's CAS Report will include their LSAT score(s), LSAT writing section(s), all post-secondary transcripts, and letters of recommendation,' and 'Applicants must submit all post-secondary transcripts to LSAC so they can be included in the CAS Report.' WVU is unusually explicit that the LSAC-standardized GPA is not the whole story: 'While neither coursework for subsequent bachelor's degrees nor for advanced degrees is factored into the LSAC-calculated GPA, the Enrollment Management Committee takes this further academic work into consideration as part of its evaluation.' Applicants still in school are pushed to keep the file current: the committee 'strongly encourages students who are applying during their senior year of college or final year of graduate school to provide updated transcripts to LSAC at the completion of each subsequent academic semester or quarter.' Grade concerns are routed to the addendum, not the personal statement: 'Students may address any concerns regarding their coursework or grades in the Addendum section of the application.' Do not send documents directly: 'Applicants should not send LSAT score reports, transcripts, or letters of recommendation directly to WVU Law unless specifically requested by the Enrollment Management Office' -- the English proficiency reports below are the stated exception. WVU also publishes LSAC's own costs, which most schools omit: a 'one-time registration fee of $215 for this service and an additional $45 for each law school to which the applicant applies.' ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (item 9) is required of 'Applicants from non-English-speaking countries' unless they hold a postsecondary degree taught in English, and WVU publishes five accepted tests with minimums rather than TOEFL alone: 'TOEFL iBT (Home Edition accepted): 79; Academic IELTS: 6.5; TOEFL Essentials: 9.0; Duolingo English Test: 105; PTE Academic: 53.' Explicit exclusions: 'WVU Law does not accept expired scores, scores that cannot be verified, General IELTS, or institutional TOEFLs (TOEFL ITP).' A degree-based waiver can be requested by email. No minimum GPA is published, and the pages do not state that a bachelor's degree must be conferred before matriculation.

  • Application feeRequiredat submission
    Notes & source

'The application fee is $50 USD, payable by credit card at submission. Applicants may request a fee waiver by completing the Fee Waiver Request Form.' WVU's 2025 ABA Standard 509 report independently certifies the fee as 50. The waiver is a discretionary request through a WVU-hosted form rather than an automatic consequence of holding an LSAC fee waiver, and the page publishes no eligibility criteria, no decision timeline, and no deadline for requesting it -- recorded as silence rather than as an absence of criteria. LSAC's own fees are separate and WVU states them plainly on the same page: a one-time $215 CAS registration fee plus $45 per school.

  • InterviewOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

Recorded as the site's silence, not as a statement that WVU does not interview. No page fetched on 2026-08-18 -- admissions overview, apply, dates and deadlines, after you've applied, scholarships and financial aid, or ABA required disclosures -- mentions an admissions interview of any kind, evaluative or informational, by invitation or on request. The published holistic-review list is explicit about what the Enrollment Management Committee weighs and contains no interview: 'Academic achievement and potential; Undergraduate and graduate coursework; Leadership experience; Community involvement; Overcoming adversity; Work and life experience; Demonstrated interest in the study and practice of law.' The only in-person contact offered to prospective applicants is a tour or information session, which is not described as part of the evaluation.
