What it costs, how graduates fare
- Tuition2025-26
$12,076–$32,184 full-time · resident to non-resident · plus $5,037 annual fees
Living expenses $16,452 on campus · $18,034 off
Tuition and the fees the school certifies alongside it — not a full cost of attendance.

- Bar passageclass of 2025
69.2%first-time−10.3
79.5% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 54 of 78 first-time takers passed
91.2% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating
A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

64 of 82 (78.0%) in full-time, long-term jobs requiring bar admission
Ten months after graduation · 5 more in JD-advantage jobs · 6 still seeking
The ABA collects employment status and job type only. It collects no salary, so no salary figure comes from this filing.

No law school publishes a graduation rate, so this is not one. It is the students who left in their first year, academic and other, as filed. Transfers out are reported separately and are not counted here.

A College Scorecard median for 2017-18 and 2018-19 completers who received federal aid, measured a fixed number of years after they finished — not what this year’s graduates are being paid, and not a figure the school or the ABA publishes. The ABA collects no salary data at all.

Essays
- Personal statementRequired · 2 pgstart by Jun 10, 2027
Your personal statement may contain but is not limited to the following topics: What has led to your interest in law school? What would you describe as your most significant accomplishment? What would make you a successful law student? What do you want to do with a law degree? How would you contribute to the law school community and legal profession? Describe any life experiences that have shaped you as an individual or led to your interest in law school. Describe challenges you've encountered and how you have overcome them.
Notes & source
'You must submit a one- to two-page personal statement with the application through the CAS.' RECORDED AS page_limit 2, WHICH IS A JUDGMENT CALL AND IS FLAGGED AS ONE. docs/CURATION.md warns against converting guidance into a cap, and this sentence carries no ceiling phrase -- no 'no longer than', 'not exceed', or 'maximum'. But it is prescriptive rather than advisory: 'you must submit a one- to two-page personal statement' instructs the applicant what to submit, unlike Wyoming's descriptive 'A typical personal statement is 2-3 pages' or Dayton's 'we recommend... approximately'. Two pages is the outer bound of what the school says it wants, and the error is asymmetric -- an applicant who writes two pages is safe under either reading. No spacing, font or margin instruction is published. SEVEN SUGGESTED TOPICS ARE OFFERED AND NONE IS REQUIRED -- the list is prefaced 'may contain but is not limited to' -- so this is a menu rather than a question. Note that two of the seven cover ground other schools split into separate essays: 'Describe any life experiences that have shaped you as an individual' and 'Describe challenges you've encountered and how you have overcome them.' Because USD folds that material into the personal statement's menu rather than naming a separate prompt, no perspective_statement row is recorded; the three named optional prompts are recorded separately as optional_essay. Writing skills are an explicitly listed admission factor.

- Optional essayOptional · 2 pgschool-specificstart by Jun 24, 2027
How do you envision leveraging your JD to contribute to creating a more equitable society? What personal experiences or aspirations motivated your decision to pursue a legal education? What unique qualities or experiences do you bring to the table as an applicant, and how do they distinguish you from others?
Notes & source
'All applicants are invited, but not required, to submit an additional essay that addresses one of the following prompts. The additional essay should not exceed two pages.' Three prompts are published and quoted above in full; ONE is to be answered, not all three. page_limit 2 is a genuine cap here -- 'should not exceed' is ceiling language, unlike the personal statement's range. USD does not say whether submitting one helps, whether any prompt is preferred, or how the essay is weighed; all recorded as silence. NOTE THE SECOND PROMPT OVERLAPS THE REQUIRED PERSONAL STATEMENT'S OWN MENU almost exactly -- 'What personal experiences or aspirations motivated your decision to pursue a legal education?' against the statement's 'What has led to your interest in law school?' and 'Describe any life experiences that have shaped you' -- so an applicant choosing that prompt should plan the two documents together to avoid answering the same question twice. Recorded as optional_essay rather than perspective_statement because these are outward-facing questions with a choice among prompts, rather than an invitation to supply personal context.

- AddendumOptionalstart by Jun 28, 2027
Notes & source
USD PUBLISHES NO ADDENDUM INVITATION OF ANY KIND -- no general explanatory statement, no GPA or test-score addendum, and no character-and-fitness addendum instruction anywhere on its admissions pages. An applicant with a weak semester or a score disparity has no named place to explain it, though the required personal statement's seven-topic menu includes 'Describe challenges you've encountered and how you have overcome them', and the three optional essay prompts offer another route. Recorded as the school's silence rather than a refusal to accept such material. WHAT IS PUBLISHED ON CHARACTER AND FITNESS IS THE ABA STANDARD 504 CAUTION AND NOTHING MORE: 'In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction.' There is no question set, no disclosure instruction, no explanation requirement, and no continuing duty to update -- among the thinnest character-and-fitness treatments in either batch. required is false because no written addendum is ever asked for, conditionally or otherwise.

Letters & documents
- Letter of recommendation (1 of 2)Requiredstart by Jun 3, 2027
Notes & source
'Two letters of recommendation are required. Letters of recommendation must be submitted by instructors, employers, or supervisors.' A RECENCY-TRIGGERED ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT: 'Applicants who have received their undergraduate or graduate degree within the preceding three years must include an academic letter of recommendation as one of the two letters. Otherwise, letters should be from instructors, employers, or supervisors.' So a recent graduate must supply an academic letter; anyone three or more years out may use two professional ones. That three-year line is precise where most schools say 'several years', which makes it easy to apply. AN EXPLICIT WARNING ABOUT WEAK LETTERS, unusually blunt: 'In evaluating the applicant's aptitude, character, and promise, the Admissions Committee will discount any perfunctory letters from persons only casually acquainted with the applicant.' Worth reading as a caution against name-value recommenders. NO MAXIMUM IS PUBLISHED, so count_accepted is left unset rather than guessed. Letters travel through CAS -- 'All application materials are part of the Credential Assembly Service (CAS) and will be included in your law school report.'

OPTIONAL, AND STATED FLATLY: 'Students are able to attach a resume to their application. This is an optional application material.' No page limit, format, or content guidance is published, and USD does not say whether submitting one is encouraged. All recorded as silence. Note the resume does not appear among the nine published admission factors, which name the test score, undergraduate GPA, graduate work, professional experience, letters, personal statement, writing skills and community activities -- so professional experience is weighed, but the document conveying it is not required.

- LSAT or GRERequiredstart by May 2, 2027
Notes & source
ALL THREE TESTS ARE ACCEPTED -- 'All applicants must take the LSAT, GRE, or JD Next' -- but THE CHOICE HAS A PRICE ATTACHED THAT DWARFS EVERY OTHER CONSIDERATION IN THIS FILE, and it runs the opposite way from most schools' GRE policies. 'Out-of-state students who score 150+ on the LSAT qualify for in-state tuition for all three years. This only applies to candidates who take the LSAT and will not apply to applicants who apply with a GRE or JD Next score.' The 509 certifies resident tuition at $12,076 against non-resident at $32,184, so an out-of-state applicant who takes the LSAT and clears 150 saves roughly $20,000 a year -- about $60,000 over the degree -- and one who applies on a GRE or JD-Next score does not, however high the score. A 150 sits just above this school's own 25th-percentile LSAT of 149, so a clear majority of admitted applicants would clear the bar if they sat the LSAT at all -- which makes the rule less a stretch target than a reason not to choose the GRE. Any out-of-state applicant weighing which test to take should treat this sentence as the answer. TIMING: 'We recommend that you complete the admission test no later than February of the year in which you wish to apply. We accept scores from the June LSAT for the same year, but the application must be submitted by July 1.' NO MINIMUM SCORE is published for admission (the 150 threshold is a tuition rule, not an admissions one), and nothing is said about superscoring, averaging, or multiple sittings -- silences rather than policies. JD-Next acceptance means USD holds an ABA Standard 503 variance. The 509 shows the alternatives are barely used: 87 of the 88 first-years enrolled on an LSAT score, with a single enrollee in the combined 'NON-LSAT, GRE OR JDNEXT' row -- consistent with the tuition incentive steering applicants to the LSAT.

- Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by Jun 10, 2027
Notes & source
'We participate in the Credential Assembly Service (CAS). All applicants must register with the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) and register for the CAS to apply.' TRANSCRIPTS ALSO GO DIRECTLY TO THE LAW SCHOOL, WHICH IS UNUSUAL -- most schools in this data set forbid it: 'Official transcripts must be sent directly to the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law from the issuing institution(s).' What counts as official is spelled out: paper 'must bear the original seal and signature of the official in charge of records', electronic must be 'transmitted directly between institutions using the electronic transcript service authorized by the issuing institution', and 'A transcript delivered by the student or issued to the student is not official.' THE HARDEST DEADLINE IN THIS FILE FALLS AFTER YOU ENROL, AND THE PENALTY IS AUTOMATIC: 'Official transcripts must be received by the USD Knudson School of Law by October 15 of the student's first semester of matriculation at the USD Knudson School of Law. If the official transcript is not received by that date, the student will be administratively withdrawn.' Not 'may be' -- will be. A degree is required, and USD reserves a credential-evaluation right: it 'retains the right to require credential evaluations from organizations, such as Educational Credential Evaluators/World Education Services (ECE/WES), if such an evaluation is deemed necessary.' No minimum GPA is published, and no undergraduate major is preferred: 'We seek applicants from all backgrounds, from political science and English to foreign languages, sciences, engineering, mathematics and the arts.' INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS ARE FULLY SPECIFIED with three accepted tests: 'A Proficiency Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79 on the internet-based TOEFL or 550 on the written TOEFL is required for admission. The International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) exam is also accepted with a minimum score of 6.0. The PTE Academic English Test is also accepted with a minimum score of 53.' Two waivers are published: applicants from named English-speaking countries 'including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland and New Zealand' whose records show English instruction, and anyone holding a US degree. Admitted international students must also clear a financial-ability review before an I-20 is issued.

- Application feeRequiredat submission
Notes & source
$35, certified by the 509 as 'Application fee $35' -- and the admissions pages never mention a fee at all. No amount, no payment step, and no waiver process appears on the how-to-apply page, the law admissions landing page, or the school profile page as fetched on 2026-08-20. Recorded as required true on the strength of the 509, with the site's complete silence noted: an applicant reading only USD's own admissions pages would not know a fee exists. NO WAIVER PROCESS IS PUBLISHED -- neither need-based, nor keyed to an LSAC waiver, nor tied to an event -- recorded as silence rather than as a statement that none exists. LSAC's own CAS and report charges are separate and USD does not address them. No seat deposit amount or deadline is published either.

Notes & source
Recorded as the site's silence, not as a statement that USD does not interview. Neither the how-to-apply page -- which carries the admission factors, the full materials list, and separate sections for international, transfer and visiting applicants -- nor the law admissions landing page or the school profile page uses the word 'interview' in any form, as fetched on 2026-08-20. The nine published admission factors are entirely file-based: test score, undergraduate GPA, graduate and other academic work, professional experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement, writing skills, and community activities.
