What it costs, how graduates fare

Tuition2025-26

$71,052 full-time · plus $2,472 annual fees

$54,710 part-time

Tuition and the fees the school certifies alongside it — not a full cost of attendance.

Bar passageclass of 2025

86.5%first-time+0.5

85.9% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 262 of 303 first-time takers passed

89.6% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating

A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

Employmentclass of 2025

234 of 313 (74.8%) in full-time, long-term jobs requiring bar admission

Ten months after graduation · 33 more in JD-advantage jobs · 20 still seeking · 1 of the bar-admission jobs are funded by the school

The ABA collects employment status and job type only. It collects no salary, so no salary figure comes from this filing.

First-year attrition2024-25

8.0% of the first-year class · 33 students

No law school publishes a graduation rate, so this is not one. It is the students who left in their first year, academic and other, as filed. Transfers out are reported separately and are not counted here.

EarningsCollege Scorecard

Not a starting salary.

$76,166 median one year after finishing · $109,122 after four

$107,773 is the national median at four years for the same credential

A College Scorecard median for 2017-18 and 2018-19 completers who received federal aid, measured a fixed number of years after they finished — not what this year’s graduates are being paid, and not a figure the school or the ABA publishes. The ABA collects no salary data at all.

Essays

  • Personal statementRequired · 2 pgstart by Feb 8, 2027
    Notes & source

'Personal statement (two pages maximum)' — a hard cap, and among the shortest in this data set. That is the entire instruction on the application checklist: NYLS publishes no prompt, no topic, no formatting requirement, and says nothing about generative AI, so no prompt is recorded. The school does link separate guidance — 'Read our guide to crafting a powerful personal statement' — which was not fetched for this file and is not treated as part of the requirement. WHAT THE STATEMENT IS WEIGHED AGAINST, from the admissions criteria section of the J.D. Applicants page: 'New York Law School takes a holistic approach to reviewing applications and selecting students for our programs. All parts of an applicant's profile are important in determining admission, including prior academic achievement and their lived experience. Accordingly, we focus heavily on an applicant's demonstrated commitment to enter the legal profession, their ability to succeed in law school as may be suggested by their academic transcripts and LSAT scores, other achievements and awards/public recognitions, their work history and professional backgrounds, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and strong resolve to impact society through the law.' The same section adds 'There is also focus on leadership, grit, and authenticity.' NO OTHER ESSAY IS ASKED FOR: NYLS publishes no perspective or diversity statement, no why-school essay, and no optional essay prompt anywhere on its admissions pages. Two pages is the whole of an applicant's voice here.

  • AddendumOptionalstart by Feb 26, 2027
    Notes & source

CHARACTER AND FITNESS ONLY, required when triggered, and stated in a single checklist line: 'Supporting documents if you answered affirmatively on the character and fitness portion in the application.' No format, length, or content guidance is published — the word used is 'documents' rather than an explanation or statement, which is unusual phrasing and may mean records rather than a narrative. NO GENERAL ADDENDUM IS INVITED: no GPA addendum, no LSAT addendum, and no open-ended 'anything else' invitation appears anywhere on NYLS's admissions pages, so an applicant wanting to explain a weak transcript has only the two-page personal statement in which to do it. Recorded as a silence. Recorded as required: false because the trigger is conditional.

Letters & documents

  • Letter of recommendationRequiredstart by Feb 1, 2027
    Notes & source

'Letter(s) of recommendation (minimum one, maximum three)' — one is enough for a complete file, which is a lower floor than most schools in this data set. No preference between academic and professional writers is published, no content guidance is given, and no routing instruction appears on the checklist, though all applicants must register with LSAC's Credential Assembly Service, which is the normal channel. NYLS does link help for applicants asking: 'Read a sample letter of recommendation request.' That page was not fetched for this file.

  • RésuméRequiredstart by Feb 22, 2027
    Notes & source

Listed on the application checklist as simply 'Résumé'. No page limit, format, or content guidance is published anywhere on NYLS's admissions pages, so none is recorded. The admissions-criteria section makes clear it is read substantively — 'their work history and professional backgrounds' is named among the factors the school says it focuses heavily on.

  • Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by Feb 8, 2027
    Notes & source

'Create a Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) account. All applicants must register with LSAC's Credential Assembly Service before starting their applications' — registration is a precondition to applying, not merely a step in it. Transcripts: 'Transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended, including foreign institutions.' DEGREE REQUIREMENT, stated twice: 'all candidates for J.D. admission must have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or the foreign equivalent' on the checklist page, and 'A Bachelor's Degree or foreign equivalent' among the two things the admissions-criteria section says a candidate must have. NO SEPARATE INTERNATIONAL INSTRUCTIONS ARE PUBLISHED: no TOEFL or IELTS requirement, no minimum English-proficiency score, and no foreign-credential-evaluation instruction appears beyond the words 'including foreign institutions' in the transcript line. Recorded as a silence; an internationally educated applicant should ask. No minimum GPA is published.

  • LSAT or GRERequiredstart by Dec 31, 2026
    Notes & source

LSAT ONLY IN PRACTICE, AND THE GRE IS NEVER MENTIONED — recorded as a silence about the GRE rather than as a refusal. The admissions-criteria section states the requirement positively: candidates 'must have: · A Bachelor's Degree or foreign equivalent · A valid Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score.' The application checklist says only 'Prepare and register for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).' No NYLS page fetched on 2026-08-18 — admissions overview, J.D. Applicants, how to apply, the part-time evening division page, or facts and stats — contains the word GRE or any reference to JD-Next, so the school neither accepts nor rejects either in print. NYLS's 2025 ABA Standard 509 report is consistent with an LSAT-only practice: all 409 first-year enrollees are reported as LSAT admissions enrollees, and the filing prints no GRE row and no JD-Next row at all. No score-validity window, no multiple-score policy, and no last-acceptable administration is published — though the how-to-apply page does list the cycle's six LSAT administrations beside the deadlines, the last of which (June 9–12, 2027) falls after the June 1 application deadline. LSAT Writing is not mentioned.

Administrative

  • Application feeOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

NOTHING TO PAY: 'Complete an NYLS application. There is no fee to apply.' NYLS's 2025 ABA Standard 509 report independently lists the application fee as 0. Recorded as required: false because there is nothing to pay and no waiver process to apply for — the fee has been removed rather than waived on request. LSAC's own CAS and Letter of Recommendation Service fees are separate and are not addressed by NYLS's pages.

  • InterviewOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

Recorded as the site's silence, not as a statement that NYLS does not interview. No NYLS admissions page fetched on 2026-08-18 — the admissions overview, J.D. Applicants with its full admissions-criteria section, how to apply with its item-by-item checklist, the part-time evening division page, or facts and stats — mentions an admissions interview of any kind. The admissions-criteria section enumerates what the committee focuses on and no interview appears among the factors. The only contact the school offers prospective applicants is a campus visit or the admissions team's 'upcoming virtual drop-in hours', neither described as part of the evaluation.
