72.0%first-time−11.0

82.9% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 236 of 328 first-time takers passed

83.1% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating

A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

Essays

  • Personal statementRequired · 3 pgstart by May 11, 2027

What motivates you to study law? What experiences will you bring to your law school education and build on in your career after law school?

    Notes & source

page_limit is recorded as 3 because 'Your personal statement should be two to three pages, double-spaced, and at least 11-point font' states a bounded range as the instruction; two pages is the stated floor, which the schema cannot represent and is noted here. The font rule is a minimum rather than a fixed size. The prompt is a genuine two-part question rather than an open invitation. IMPORTANTLY, THIS IS NOT THE ONLY REQUIRED ESSAY -- Mitchell Hamline also requires at least one supplemental statement, which is where adversity, background, and 'why Mitchell Hamline' material belongs; see the perspective_statement entry. An applicant reusing a personal statement written for a school that folds those themes together will need to split it apart here.

    Verified 2026-08-18 · source page

  • Perspective statementRequired · 2 pgstart by May 18, 2027

Supplemental statements allow you an opportunity to provide us with relevant information that you were not able to include elsewhere in your application materials. Please submit your response to at least one, but no more than two, of the following topics. A. Mitchell Hamline values perseverance, resilience, and self-awareness as traits necessary to succeed both at Mitchell Hamline and in the legal profession. Tell us about a challenge or adversity you have faced, and how your response demonstrates one or more of those traits. B. Mitchell Hamline students come from a broad range of backgrounds, with diverse views and perspectives. We aspire to be a community where students can learn and thrive in an equitable and inclusive environment. Tell us something about yourself, and how it shapes the way you would learn from and contribute to our community. C. What about Mitchell Hamline's vision, mission, values, community, academic offerings, and/or distinct programming make it a good fit for your educational, personal, and/or professional goals?

    Notes & source

REQUIRED, NOT OPTIONAL, which is easy to miss because the school calls these 'supplemental' statements: applicants must 'submit your response to at least one, but no more than two, of the following topics.' Recorded as a single requirement because it is one instruction with a pick-one-or-two structure, and classified as perspective_statement because two of the three topics (A adversity and resilience, B background and contribution to community) are perspective writing. TOPIC C IS A 'WHY MITCHELL HAMLINE' ESSAY and is the only place that case can be made -- a separate why_x_essay row is deliberately not recorded, because choosing C costs the applicant a perspective topic and the three compete for the same one-or-two slots. An applicant who wants to cover adversity, background and fit has to drop at least one. Format is prescribed and identical across the three: 'Each supplemental statement should be no more than two pages, double-spaced, and at least 11-point font. Please include the corresponding letter of the topic you are addressing at the top of your statement(s).' page_limit 2 is per statement, not in total, so a two-statement applicant may file four pages across the pair. Note the labelling instruction is procedural and easy to fail: the topic letter must appear at the top of each statement.

North Star Scholarship: If you are applying to the blended-learning enrollment option and you intend to use your legal education to practice law in a rural area, reservation, or small city or town currently underserved by local lawyers, please explain in a one-page, double-spaced essay your ongoing experience with and commitment to practice in that community. Native Justice Scholarship: To be eligible for the scholarship, students must demonstrate an interest in Native American Law and Sovereignty in a one-page, double-spaced scholarship essay.

    Notes & source

Two named scholarship essays, filed on the application page as a 'scholarship addendum (if applicable)'. Both are one page, double-spaced, and page_limit 1 is a real cap in each case. AN APPLICANT MAY APPLY FOR BOTH BUT WIN ONLY ONE: 'A student may apply to both scholarships; however, if rewarded, will only be granted one of the two scholarships.' NORTH STAR is gated on enrolment option as well as intent -- it is open only to applicants 'applying to the blended-learning enrollment option' who intend to practise 'in a rural area, reservation, or small city or town currently underserved by local lawyers', so a full-time on-campus applicant cannot use it. NATIVE JUSTICE has two routes: enrolled members of a federally recognised American Indian/Alaska Native Tribal Nation who 'demonstrate an ongoing experience working in and with Native American communities and a commitment to using their legal education to continue to do so', with documentation of 'enrollment number or other Native community authority confirming their status'; and separately 'All other applicants may be eligible for the Native Justice Scholarship by providing documentation to demonstrate an ongoing experience working in and with Native American communities as a career and the intention to use their JD degree in the field of Native American law.' One duplication saver: 'If you submitted documentation regarding your tribal affiliation and/or a heritage statement with your application, you do not need to include this information in the Native Justice Scholarship essay.' Each essay must clearly indicate which scholarship it is for.

  • AddendumOptional · 1 pgstart by May 29, 2027
    Notes & source

TWO SEPARATE OPTIONAL ADDENDA, each capped at one page, plus a conditional character-and-fitness attachment. page_limit 1 reflects the stated cap on both optional addenda. (1) SCORE ADDENDUM: 'You may include an addendum of no more than one page, double-spaced, explaining any exceptional circumstances relating to test preparation or testing conditions or providing other information that will help the admissions committee interpret your scores.' (2) GRADE ADDENDUM, worded in parallel: 'You may include an addendum of no more than one page, double-spaced, explaining any exceptional circumstances relating to your post-secondary education experience or providing other information that will help the admissions committee interpret your grades.' So a candidate with both a score and a grade story to tell may file two separate one-page documents rather than combining them. (3) REQUIRED WHEN TRIGGERED, character and fitness: 'If you answered “yes” to any character and fitness question, you must submit any necessary documentation, as described in the question to which you answer “yes.”' Note that adversity and background are NOT addendum material here -- they belong in the required supplemental statement, which has its own two-page allowance.

Letters & documents

  • Letter of recommendation (1 of 2)Requiredstart by May 4, 2027
    Notes & source

'Two confidential letters of recommendation are required. Your recommenders must submit their letters directly to CAS. Letters submitted directly to Mitchell Hamline will not be accepted.' Note 'will not be accepted' rather than 'discouraged' -- a letter emailed to the school is wasted. 'You have the option of submitting up to two additional letters of recommendation, for a total of four letters.' On content: 'Your recommenders should know you well and be able to assess your personal qualities and your potential for success in law school. They should describe at least some of these characteristics: Academic ability, including creative thinking, reasoning ability, analytical skills, and oral and written communication skills; Leadership and interpersonal skills; Motivation and self-discipline; Demonstrated ethics.' TWO PREFERENCES THAT NARROW THE FIELD, and the recency one is unusual enough to plan around: 'The admissions committee strongly prefers letters that are no older than two years and from recommenders who know you through a work, academic, or other professional setting.' A second-career applicant holding an undergraduate professor's letter from a decade ago should expect it to count for less here. Note also that letters must be CONFIDENTIAL, which is a stated condition rather than an option.

  • RésuméRequiredstart by May 25, 2027
    Notes & source

Required, and explicitly uncapped: 'Your résumé should include a complete history of your post-secondary employment and education, including graduation and employment dates, colleges, and degrees received. It may also include a listing of significant extracurricular activities, volunteer or community service experience, leadership activities, awards and honors, or internships. The resume is not limited to one page.' No page_limit is recorded because the school states the opposite of a cap. The emphasis on a complete post-secondary employment history fits a school whose intake skews toward second-career students -- the student profile describes 'second-career professionals' and 'people whose law school ambitions have been on hold for years while raising a family, establishing a career, and investing in their communities.'

  • LSAT or GRERequiredstart by Apr 2, 2027
    Notes & source

LSAT REQUIRED; THE GRE IS ACCEPTED AS SUPPLEMENTARY BUT NEVER AS A SUBSTITUTE -- an explicit denial rather than a silence, and the same shape as Howard's policy: 'If you have taken the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) and would like to include your scores in your application, please use Mitchell Hamline School of Law's code (4750) to submit them. Mitchell Hamline does not require GRE scores or accept them in place of the LSAT score. However, we will take your GRE scores into consideration if you submit them.' So a GRE-only applicant cannot apply here. 'Applicants must have a reportable LSAT score to be considered for admission,' and 'LSAT scores are reportable by LSAC for five years from the time of testing.' HOW MULTIPLE SCORES ARE USED DIFFERS BETWEEN ADMISSION AND MONEY, which is worth planning around: 'The admissions committee will look at all scores when reviewing an application for admission, taking into consideration score trends, the most recent score, and the average of all reported scores. Mitchell Hamline will consider the highest LSAT score among multiple scores for the purpose of scholarship awards.' LSAT WRITING IS READ, not merely required: 'At least one LSAT writing sample is required. The admissions committee reviews LSAT writing samples carefully, taking into consideration use of facts provided, reasoning, thoroughness, organization, and technical writing skill.' A score addendum is invited -- see the addendum entry. The 509 corroborates: all 364 first-year enrollees are LSAT admissions enrollees, with no GRE and no JD-Next row. No JD-Next variance is mentioned anywhere.

  • Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by May 11, 2027
    Notes & source

'Request official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended. Transcripts must be sent to CAS using the form provided by LSAC. Mitchell Hamline requires that students have earned a bachelor's degree before entering law school.' The CAS report carries transcripts, letters, LSAT score and LSAT writing sample together. HOW THE RECORD IS READ, which matters to applicants with an uneven or distant academic history: 'The admissions committee will review all your undergraduate and graduate work from every institution and program you attended. The committee will consider trends in your grades, specific coursework, and the length of time since your coursework.' PRIOR LAW STUDY must be disclosed with an explanation: 'If you withdrew or were dismissed from any law school in the past, please provide an official transcript from the law school, a complete explanation, and information about why you believe you will succeed at Mitchell Hamline.' A FEE WAIVER EXISTS FOR THE CAS REPORT ITSELF, which few schools offer and which is easy to miss: 'Mitchell Hamline offers a limited number of the Law School Report fee waivers. Reach out to [the admissions office] for more information.' The school also points applicants to the LSAC fee waiver programme for the LSAT. Separate instructions exist for international (foreign-educated) students, which were not read for this file. No minimum GPA is published.

  • Application feeOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

THERE IS NO APPLICATION FEE, stated twice: 'Mitchell Hamline School of Law does not charge an application fee' on the applying page, and 'Applications must be submitted online. We do not charge an application fee' in the checklist. The 2025 ABA Standard 509 report independently certifies the fee as $0. Recorded as required: false because there is nothing to pay and nothing to waive. Note that Mitchell Hamline does address the OTHER costs of applying, which most schools leave alone -- it points to the LSAC fee waiver programme for the LSAT, offers 'a limited number of the Law School Report fee waivers' for the CAS report, and runs an LSAT Preparation Scholarship covering a BluePrint prep course plus a discounted $350 BluePrint package for prospective applicants.

  • InterviewOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

AN EXPLICIT STATEMENT THAT NO INTERVIEW IS REQUIRED -- but read the wording carefully, because it is not the same as saying the school never interviews: 'We don't require admission interviews but encourage applicants to learn more about the school and the process by attending an information session, touring the campus, or meeting with an admissions representative.' So there is no evaluative interview step in the application, and nothing an applicant must complete; what the school offers instead is optional, non-evaluative contact. The admissions office positions itself the same way on the applying page: 'The counselors in our Admissions Office are meant to be resources and guides through this process. We strongly encourage informational conversations with one of our Admissions counselors.' Those conversations are described as guidance rather than assessment, so they are not recorded as an evaluative interview.
