What it costs, how graduates fare

Tuition2025-26

$18,634–$24,354 full-time · resident to non-resident · plus $2,594 annual fees

$16,940–$22,140 part-time

Living expenses $28,729 on campus

Tuition and the fees the school certifies alongside it — not a full cost of attendance.

Bar passageclass of 2025

72.6%first-time−7.1

79.8% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 69 of 95 first-time takers passed

90.6% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating

A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

75 of 94 (79.8%) in full-time, long-term jobs requiring bar admission

Ten months after graduation · 11 more in JD-advantage jobs · 4 still seeking

The ABA collects employment status and job type only. It collects no salary, so no salary figure comes from this filing.

First-year attrition2024-25

7.0% of the first-year class · 5 students

No law school publishes a graduation rate, so this is not one. It is the students who left in their first year, academic and other, as filed. Transfers out are reported separately and are not counted here.

$107,773 is the national median at four years for the same credential

A College Scorecard median for 2017-18 and 2018-19 completers who received federal aid, measured a fixed number of years after they finished — not what this year’s graduates are being paid, and not a figure the school or the ABA publishes. The ABA collects no salary data at all.

Essays

  • Personal statementRequired · 1000 wstart by Feb 8, 2027

Each applicant is required to submit a personal statement. This statement provides you the opportunity to describe your background and any unique experiences, characteristics or circumstances you want the admissions committee to consider. You should explain your desire to study law, why you believe you will be a successful law student, and what you hope to do with your law degree. You are encouraged to explain your interest in attending our law school and may discuss any information not otherwise apparent from your application.

    Notes & source

'Limit your personal statement to no more than 1,000 words.' A word cap rather than a page cap, which is less common and tighter than it looks — roughly three double-spaced pages. THREE THINGS ARE ASKED FOR AND A FOURTH IS ENCOURAGED: the desire to study law, why the applicant will succeed, what they intend to do with the degree, and — 'encouraged' rather than required — an explanation of interest in Memphis specifically. That last clause is why this file records no separate why_x_essay row. No formatting requirement is published and nothing is said about generative AI. One formatting instruction applies to attachments generally: 'Include your name and LSAC account number on any addenda.' • Optional essayOptionalschool-specificstart by Feb 22, 2027

Prompt 1: What life experiences have had the biggest impact on shaping your character and why? Prompt 2: How do you believe your experiences or perspective will make you a better law student or lawyer? Prompt 3: Discuss the importance of divergent thoughts and perspectives and whether you have ever been persuaded to change your opinion after having a conversation with someone with a different perspective than your own. Prompt 4: Discuss any circumstance(s) that have had an impact on your educational opportunities, character, or perspective(s). Prompt 5: How do you feel your perspective, your voice, or experiences will contribute to the classroom.

    Notes & source

FIVE PROMPTS, PICK ONE: 'If you feel you have additional relevant information to share that will provide the admissions committee a more in-depth understanding of your background, interests, and goals, we encourage you to provide a supplemental essay using the prompts provided. Supplemental essays allow you an opportunity to provide relevant information that you were not able to include elsewhere in your application materials. If you think writing on any of the topics suggested would help the Admissions Committee have a better sense of who you are, please select from one of the prompts below. Please be sure to include the number of the prompt you are addressing at the top of your essay.' The numbering instruction is a real formatting requirement. No word or page limit is published for the supplemental essay. THIS IS MEMPHIS'S PERSPECTIVE STATEMENT IN ALL BUT NAME — prompts 2, 4 and 5 are the post-2023 perspective question in three different phrasings, and prompt 3 is the viewpoint-diversity variant several schools adopted at the same time. No separate perspective_statement row is recorded because there is one optional document and five ways to answer it. RE-READ 2026-10-07 against the edited Guide to Applying: unchanged in substance.

  • AddendumOptionalstart by Feb 26, 2027
    Notes & source

TWO KINDS. (1) ADMONITORY ACTION, required when triggered — Memphis uses that phrase rather than character and fitness: 'Applicants must answer questions in the Admonitory Action section of the application. If an applicant answers "yes" to any of the questions, they must provide an addendum detailing the date and location of the event and an explanation of what occurred. Applicants are encouraged to include related court documents.' (2) AN OPTIONAL EXPLANATORY ADDENDUM with two named triggers, and a clear instruction to keep it out of the personal statement: 'If you want to include relevant information explaining a low undergraduate grade point average or low LSAT score, we encourage you to submit an addendum separate from your personal statement.' That separation matters at a school with a 1,000-word cap on the statement itself — an explanation written inside the statement costs words the applicant cannot spare. No length limit is published for either addendum. Both must carry identification: 'Include your name and LSAC account number on any addenda.' Letters & documents

  • Letter of recommendationRequiredstart by Feb 1, 2027
    Notes & source

'One letter of recommendation is required and you may submit up to four letters. Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly to LSAC to be included in your CAS report.' A one-letter floor and a four-letter ceiling is a wide range by the standards of this data set. WHO SHOULD WRITE, AND WHO SHOULD NOT: 'Recommendations or evaluations should be from professors, instructors, or other professionals who can provide relevant information on your intellectual ability, academic performance, potential for success in law school, and character. Letters from social acquaintances and personal or family friends, which provide only minimal or no information about your academic abilities, are not considered to be helpful. If you have been out of school for a number of years, your recommendations or evaluations may come from employers, supervisors, clients, or someone who can address the above characteristics.' Note 'clients' among the acceptable writers, which is unusual and useful for self-employed applicants. RE-READ 2026-10-07 against the edited Guide to Applying: unchanged in substance.

  • Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by Feb 8, 2027
    Notes & source

'The CAS Report simplifies the law school application process by compiling all LSAT scores, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and writing sample into a single CAS Report. LSAC will not release a CAS report until they receive an original transcript from every undergraduate institution you have attended, including summer sessions and study abroad programs.' Summer sessions and study abroad are named specifically — both are commonly forgotten, and either one missing holds up the whole report. THE WRITING SAMPLE IS A MEMPHIS REQUIREMENT, not merely an LSAC one: 'Please be aware that we require a writing sample be included in your CAS report.' MONITORING IS THE APPLICANT'S JOB: 'It is the applicant's responsibility to monitor the status of his/her LSAC account.' NO EXPLICIT BACHELOR'S-DEGREE REQUIREMENT, NO MINIMUM GPA, AND NO INTERNATIONAL OR ENGLISH-PROFICIENCY INSTRUCTIONS appear in the guide to applying — recorded as silences. NO RESUME IS REQUESTED ANYWHERE either, which is why this file records no resume row: the guide lists its application components with checkboxes and a resume is not among them. • LSAT or GRERequiredstart by Dec 31, 2026
    Notes & source

EITHER TEST, WITH A FIVE-YEAR WINDOW AND ONE ONE-WAY RULE: 'Applicants for the next entering class must have a valid reportable LSAT or GRE score taken within the last five years. LSAT applicants will arrange to take the LSAT via lsac.org and the score result will appear on your CAS Report. Applicants who elect to take the GRE must instruct ETS to send all GRE scores from the preceding five-year period using school code: 1087. Please note: All applicants who have taken the LSAT are considered LSAT applicants even if GRE scores are submitted.' So the GRE is a genuine alternative, every GRE score must be sent rather than a chosen one, and an applicant who has ever sat the LSAT is judged on it regardless. LAST ACCEPTABLE ADMINISTRATION, with a candid warning attached: 'The latest test score that can be used in the review for fall admission is the June test, but seat availability is very limited at that point in the cycle.' A WRITING SAMPLE IS REQUIRED in the CAS report (see transcript_cas). No multiple-score policy — highest versus average — is published. Memphis's 2025 ABA Standard 509 report reports all 96 first-year enrollees as LSAT admissions enrollees and prints no GRE row and no JD Next row, so in that class the GRE route produced no reportable cohort. JD Next is never mentioned on the site. RE-READ 2026-10-07 against the edited Guide to Applying: unchanged in substance.

Administrative

  • Application feeOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

NOTHING TO PAY: 'The application opens in September and there is no application fee.' Memphis's 2025 ABA Standard 509 report independently lists the application fee as 0. Recorded as required: false because there is nothing to pay and no waiver process to request. LSAC's own CAS and Letter of Recommendation Service fees are separate and are not addressed by Memphis's pages. Note that the fee-free application is followed later by a '$250 non-refundable seat deposit' for admitted students. RE-READ 2026-10-07 against the edited Guide to Applying: unchanged in substance.

  • InterviewOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

Recorded as the site's silence, not as a statement that Memphis does not interview. No Memphis Law admissions page fetched on 2026-08-18 — the admissions overview, the guide to applying with its checkbox-by-checkbox list of every application component, the class profile and facts page, or the ABA disclosures page — mentions an admissions interview of any kind. The guide's component list runs to eleven items and no interview appears among them. The school offers campus visits, a recruiting calendar and virtual experiences separately, none described as part of the evaluation. ONE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE EXISTS FOR APPLICANTS NOT ADMITTED THROUGH THE REGULAR PROCESS, and it is a summer programme rather than an interview: 'The University of Memphis School of Law operates the Tennessee Institute for Pre-Law (TIP) summer program for Tennessee residents and border-county residents from underrepresented backgrounds who are not admitted through the regular process, but who show potential for the study of law... If you are interested in being considered for the TIP program, you must complete the TIP application question.' Eligible border counties are named: 'Arkansas = Crittenden, Mississippi = DeSoto, Marshall, Tate, Tunica.' RE-READ 2026-10-07 against the edited Guide to Applying: unchanged in substance.
