What it costs, how graduates fare

Tuition2025-26

$26,100–$38,160 full-time · resident to non-resident · plus $4,060 annual fees

Living expenses $28,418 on campus · $26,214 off

Tuition and the fees the school certifies alongside it — not a full cost of attendance.

85.1%first-time+13.1

72.0% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 74 of 87 first-time takers passed

95.0% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating

A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

No law school publishes a graduation rate, so this is not one. It is the students who left in their first year, academic and other, as filed. Transfers out are reported separately and are not counted here.

Essays

  • Personal statementRequiredstart by Nov 10, 2026

This is your opportunity to tell us who you are. Write carefully and succinctly. Share the experiences, values, motivations, and aspirations that will distinguish you from other applicants. Explain why you have chosen to pursue law; why you're well-suited to study and practice law; and why you think Maine Law is the right fit for you.

    Notes & source

'A personal statement, written in your own words, is required.' The prompt is a genuine three-part question rather than an invitation to write about anything: why law, why you are suited to it, and why Maine specifically. NO LENGTH LIMIT IS RECORDED. 'Write carefully and succinctly' is the only constraint Maine publishes -- there is no page count, no word count, and no formatting, font or spacing instruction anywhere on the application pages. Per docs/CURATION.md that guidance is not converted into a cap, so page_limit and word_limit are both left unset. THE THIRD CLAUSE OVERLAPS A SEPARATE OPTIONAL ESSAY, which is worth knowing before drafting: the personal statement already asks 'why you think Maine Law is the right fit for you', and Maine's application checklist ALSO offers a standalone 'Why Maine Law Statement' among its optional essays. The school does not explain how the two differ or whether answering the question twice is expected; see the why_x_essay entry.

  • Why this schoolOptionalschool-specificstart by Nov 21, 2026
    Notes & source

'Why Maine Law Statement', listed among the 'Optional Essays' on the application checklist. THAT IS THE ENTIRE PUBLISHED DESCRIPTION -- no prompt text, no length, no format, and no statement of what it should cover that the personal statement does not. Recorded as a distinct optional requirement because Maine names it as its own checklist item, but the overlap is real and unresolved: the required personal statement already instructs applicants to 'Explain... why you think Maine Law is the right fit for you.' Maine does not say whether the optional statement is for applicants who want to go deeper, whether it is redundant for those who addressed fit in the personal statement, or how it is weighed. Recorded as the school's silence rather than resolved, and worth an email to admissions before writing a second essay answering the same question. NOTE THE STRUCTURAL INCONSISTENCY BEHIND IT: the Application Process prose describes a single catch-all 'Optional Statement', while the Application Checklist a few lines below splits the optional writing into three named essays -- Life Experience Essay, Why Maine Law Statement, and LSAT/UGPA/Resume Addendum. This file follows the checklist, which is the more specific of the two, and records all three; the prose version is quoted on the addendum entry.

  • Perspective statementOptionalstart by Nov 17, 2026
    Notes & source

'Life Experience Essay', listed among the 'Optional Essays' on the application checklist. The Application Process prose describes what it is for, folded into a single optional statement: 'You may include an addendum addressing any economic, cultural, and/or societal factors, your academic record, or LSAT results, which would provide the Admissions Committee with additional insight into your application.' The 'economic, cultural, and/or societal factors' half of that sentence is what this entry records; the academic-record and LSAT half is recorded on the addendum entry, following the checklist's own three-way split. NO PROMPT, LENGTH, OR FORMAT IS PUBLISHED for it, and Maine does not say whether submitting one is neutral or encouraged -- all recorded as silence. Recorded as perspective_statement rather than optional_essay because it invites context on the applicant's own circumstances rather than posing a question.

  • AddendumOptionalstart by Nov 28, 2026
    Notes & source

TWO ADDENDA, ONE OPTIONAL AND ONE CONDITIONAL. The optional one is the academic-and-score half of Maine's catch-all statement: 'Optional Statement: You may include an addendum addressing any economic, cultural, and/or societal factors, your academic record, or LSAT results, which would provide the Admissions Committee with additional insight into your application.' The application checklist names it more narrowly as an 'LSAT, UGPA, Resume Addendum' -- so all three of the things an applicant most often needs to explain are expressly in scope, including a gap or an oddity in the resume, which many schools never mention. No length, format or count is published for it. THE CONDITIONAL ONE IS CHARACTER AND FITNESS, and it is mandatory once triggered: 'Character & Fitness Addendum: If you answer "yes" to any questions regarding character & fitness on your application, you must submit an addendum explaining the situation to the Admissions Committee.' MAINE PUBLISHES NOTHING FURTHER ABOUT IT -- no question set, no instruction on what an explanation must contain, no evidentiary or records requirement, no continuing duty to update, and no ABA Standard 504 bar-admission caution on the application pages. Against peer schools that reproduce their full question list and specify required documentation, that is a substantial silence, and an applicant with something to disclose has no published guidance on scope or depth. Recorded on the addendum entry because the taxonomy in docs/DATA.md has no character-and-fitness type; required is false because the obligation is conditional on an affirmative answer.

Letters & documents

  • Letter of recommendation (1 of 2)Requiredstart by Nov 3, 2026
    Notes & source

'Each applicant must submit at least two, but no more than four, letters of recommendation.' A clean floor and ceiling. WHAT THE LETTERS SHOULD DO IS SPECIFIED IN UNUSUAL DETAIL: 'Letters should be based on personal knowledge, and address your analytical ability, judgment, motivation, communication skills, critical thinking and distinctive talents or experiences that make you suitable for the study of law.' Six named qualities is more direction than most schools in this data set give, and worth handing to a recommender directly. TWO SOFT PREFERENCES, both hedged with 'if possible': 'at least one letter should be from a professor, or an individual who has known you in an academic setting, and at least one should be from within a year of application date.' The recency preference is the rarer of the two and is easy to fall foul of for career changers. Delivery: 'Letters of recommendation may be sent directly from the recommender and should be submitted through the CAS Recommendation Service.'

  • RésuméRequiredstart by Nov 24, 2026
    Notes & source

Listed as a component of a complete application, and as 'Resume or CV' on the application checklist -- either format is accepted. NO OTHER GUIDANCE IS PUBLISHED: no page limit, no format, no content direction, and no statement of what the committee looks for in it. Recorded as the school's silence. Note that the checklist's optional-essay list includes an 'LSAT, UGPA, Resume Addendum', so the resume is one of the three things Maine expects an applicant might need to explain; see the addendum entry.

  • LSAT or GRERequiredstart by Oct 2, 2026
    Notes & source

THE LSAT IS THE ONLY ADMISSION TEST MAINE PUBLISHES, AND THE 509 AGREES. It is listed as a required component -- 'LSAT: Must have been taken within the last 5 years' -- and again on the checklist as 'Take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)' and 'LSAT Score (from the last 5 years)'. The word GRE does not appear on the admissions landing page, the JD page, the application process page, or the first-time applicant page as fetched on 2026-08-19, and no JD-Next variance is claimed. The 509 corroborates rather than merely failing to contradict: all 104 first-year enrollees are certified in the LSAT row, and no GRE row and no JD-Next row is printed at all. Recorded as an LSAT-only policy on the strength of both sources agreeing; the taxonomy type remains lsat_or_gre. TIMING GUIDANCE IS PUBLISHED PER ROUND rather than as a general rule: November is the last administration accepted for Early Action, and for regular applicants Maine 'strongly encourage[s] applicants to apply early and take the LSAT no later than January.' NOTHING IS PUBLISHED ON HOW MULTIPLE SCORES ARE TREATED -- no statement on superscoring, averaging, or taking the highest -- and no minimum score is given. Both are silences rather than policies. The checklist does offer an 'LSAT, UGPA, Resume Addendum' as an optional essay, which is the only published route for addressing a score an applicant wants to explain.

  • Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by Nov 10, 2026
    Notes & source

'Each applicant must register with the Credential Assembly Service (CAS) through LSAC.' The report is a required component: 'CAS Report: (including LSAT scores, college transcripts and analysis of college transcripts). Your official transcripts of all collegiate, graduate and professional study must be sent directly to the CAS.' MAINE CLOSES THE USUAL WORKAROUND EXPLICITLY: 'You may not send transcripts to the Law School during the application process in lieu of a CAS report.' Note the scope -- collegiate, GRADUATE and PROFESSIONAL study all route through CAS, not just undergraduate work. Applications themselves are electronic only: 'Applications are accepted electronically through the Law School Admission Council's (LSAC) website.' NO MINIMUM GPA is published and no guidance appears on how the undergraduate record is read -- no mention of grade trends, institutional rigor, or major. ENGLISH PROFICIENCY IS HANDLED ON A SEPARATE PAGE that the admissions navigation links as 'English Language Proficiency Requirement'; its terms were not fetched for this file, so nothing about TOEFL or IELTS minimums is asserted here. That page should be read before curating any international-applicant detail for Maine.

Administrative

  • Application feeOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

THERE IS NO APPLICATION FEE. The 509 certifies 'Application fee 0', and the admissions pages corroborate by omission -- no fee amount, no payment step, and no waiver process appears anywhere in the application requirements, the application checklist, or the application timeline as fetched on 2026-08-19. Recorded as required false. Because the fee is zero there is no waiver to document, which is why the absence of waiver language is not itself recorded as a gap. LSAC's own CAS and report charges are separate and Maine does not address them. The only application-adjacent money Maine does publish is on the other side of admission, and it is substantial: a first deposit due April 15 and a second due June 1, both non-refundable though 'applied towards tuition'. Maine does not publish the deposit amounts.

  • InterviewOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

Recorded as the site's silence, not as a statement that Maine does not interview. No page fetched on 2026-08-19 -- the admissions landing page, the JD page, the application process page, the first-time applicant page with its full component list and checklist, or the entering class profile -- uses the word 'interview' in any form. The described process is entirely file-based and ends in a notification: 'A candidate is notified as soon as an admission decision is made.' The only applicant contact Maine offers is under 'Visits and Events', which is not described as part of evaluation.
