71.4%first-time−11.1

82.5% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 145 of 203 first-time takers passed

84.8% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating

A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

  • Personal statementRequired · 3 pgstart by Mar 11, 2027

All applicants are required to provide a two to three-page personal statement. The personal statement is your chance for the Admissions Committee to get to know you. We encourage you to highlight unique or valuable experiences gained outside the classroom. Whether you are a working professional who is looking to return to school to join the legal field or you completed a valuable internship that inspired your pursuit of a law degree, or you have a specific goal of using your law degree to help underserved communities, a well-written personal statement can play an important factor in the admissions process.

    Notes & source

page_limit is recorded as 3 because California Western states a BINDING RANGE rather than guidance -- 'All applicants are required to provide a two to three-page personal statement' -- so three pages is the top of a required range, unlike the 'typically 2-3 pages' phrasing that docs/CURATION.md warns against converting into a cap. Two pages is the stated floor, which is not representable in this schema and is recorded here instead. No font, spacing, or margin requirement is published. The statement carries extra weight at this school because there is no interview to supplement it -- the same page states 'PLEASE NOTE: The Admissions Committee does not conduct personal interviews' directly beneath the personal-statement instructions. NO 'WHY CALIFORNIA WESTERN' ESSAY exists: the school publishes no separate school-specific prompt, and the personal statement's own framing points at experience outside the classroom rather than at fit with the school. Adversity material has its own separate home; see the perspective_statement entry.

  • Perspective statementOptionalstart by Mar 18, 2027

An applicant who believes that their background or life experience may have adversely affected them and their past educational performance, should provide detailed information about their background or life experience in this separate adversity statement. You may describe any challenges, disadvantages, traumatic events, forms of social exclusion, or any other kinds of adversity that you have experienced, and how these life experiences may have adversely affected you and your past educational performance. If so, please discuss how you overcame these adverse experiences and/or how they have shaped the person you are.

    Notes & source

California Western calls this the 'Adversity Statement' and lists it as its own application component, separate from both the personal statement and the addendum. Optional and conditional -- it is addressed to 'An applicant who believes that their background or life experience may have adversely affected them' -- with no length limit, formatting requirement, or deadline published. Classified as perspective_statement rather than addendum because the prompt asks for more than an explanation of a weak record: it closes by asking how the experiences 'have shaped the person you are,' which is identity-and-background writing of the kind that travels between schools. The distinction is the school's own -- 'Addenda or Other Statements' is a separate component on the same page, aimed at explaining a specific perceived weakness, so an applicant with both a hard year and a formative background is expected to file two different documents. The Admissions Committee's published review factors include 'Diverse life experiences,' which is the material this statement carries.

  • AddendumOptionalstart by Mar 29, 2027

If you have perceived weakness in your application, you can submit a separate statement explaining that perceived weakness to the Admissions Committee. This could include, but is not limited to, unique situations that affected your LSAT score or an illness in college that impacted your grades. It is important to note this written statement should not be used as a means for making excuses for substandard academic performance or test scores but as a means of explaining perceived weaknesses or inconsistency.

    Notes & source

California Western's heading is 'Addenda or Other Statements'. Optional, with no published length limit or format. The closing sentence is an unusually direct tone instruction and worth passing on verbatim to applicants: the statement 'should not be used as a means for making excuses for substandard academic performance or test scores but as a means of explaining perceived weaknesses or inconsistency.' The Admissions Policies page separately lists 'Addenda (as required/prompted by the application)' among the elements of a completed application, which is the character-and-fitness style of addendum that the LSAC application itself triggers -- so some addenda are conditionally required even though this general one is optional. The same page carries the standard bar-admission caution under 'Character and Fitness to Practice Law'. 'Addenda' also appears in the committee's published list of review factors.

'Applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation. We do not require recommendations from a specific source; however, we encourage you to select someone who can speak to your work either in the classroom, at a job or internship, or in a mentorship capacity.' The Admissions Policies page independently lists 'Two letters of recommendation' among the elements of a completed application, and routes them through the CAS report. NO MAXIMUM IS PUBLISHED, so count_accepted is left unset rather than guessed. Note the deliberate absence of an academic-letter preference: California Western explicitly declines to require a particular source, which is unusual -- most schools in this data set prefer or require at least one academic letter.

Required, though the two pages that mention it say so with different force. The Application Components page describes content only -- 'Resumes should include a summary of your volunteer and/or work history, and activities where a leadership role is held' -- without the word required, while the Admissions Policies page settles it by listing 'Resume' among the elements that 'Completed applications include'. Recorded as required: true on the strength of the policies page. No page limit, format, or further content guidance is published, so none is recorded.

  • LSAT or GRERequiredstart by Jan 31, 2027
    Notes & source

THREE ACCEPTED TESTS, which is rarer than the two-test schools and is stated plainly: 'California Western accepts reportable scores from the LSAT, the GRE General Test, and the JD-Next course with exam. The American Bar Association permits law schools to accept all three tests for admission decisions. Applicants are encouraged to take the test that will best display their aptitude for law school.' Accepting JD-Next requires a variance from ABA Standard 503, and California Western's own 509 confirms it holds one by printing a JD-NEXT row. HIGHEST SCORE COUNTS BUT NOTHING IS HIDDEN: 'If more than one test is taken, we will consider the highest reported score. However, the Admissions Committee will see all scores reported.' The Admissions Policies page adds the hierarchy in which the school expects the tests to be used: a GRE report is 'only required from applicants without a valid LSAT score', and JD-Next 'only required from applicants without a valid LSAT or GRE score' -- so the LSAT remains the default path even though all three are genuinely accepted. That page also notes the JD-Next acceptance began 'with the Fall 2024 entering class'. TIMING: 'Applicants should take the LSAT, GRE, or JD-Next no later than by June in order to meet the final deadline of July 31st for fall admission.' The 509 shows all three paths in use for the fall 2025 class: 227 LSAT admissions enrollees, 8 GRE admissions enrollees, and 7 JD-Next enrollees, totalling the 242-student class. Percentiles are published for the LSAT only; the GRE and JD-Next cohorts are both under the ABA's 10-taker floor, so their score data is collected but withheld. No minimum score is published, and nothing is said about LSAT Writing.

  • Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by Mar 11, 2027
    Notes & source

'Applicants must submit transcripts to LSAC for processing from all colleges or universities they have attended,' routed through a 'Completed Credential Assembly Service (CAS) Report' per the Admissions Policies page. The degree may still be in progress at application: the undergraduate transcript 'must show either completion of bachelor's degree or projected degree completion prior to law school matriculation.' Accreditation is specified on both sides -- a US degree must come from an institution accredited by a US Department of Education-recognised agency, and a foreign degree from an institution 'equivalent to' one. A HARD POST-ADMISSION DEADLINE WITH TEETH, which is the sharpest thing on the page: 'If you are still completing classes to finish your undergraduate degree, we must have your final transcripts no later than by October 15,' and 'If your official final transcript is not on file with California Western by your applicable deadline, you will be administratively withdrawn from all classes.' That is withdrawal from classes already begun, not merely a hold on registration. No minimum GPA is published. The pages say nothing about TOEFL, IELTS, or foreign credential evaluation for JD applicants -- recorded as silence.

Administrative

  • Application feeOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

THERE IS NO APPLICATION FEE. California Western's 2025 ABA Standard 509 Information Report certifies the application fee as 0, and no admissions page fetched on 2026-08-18 -- how to apply, application components, admissions policies, dates and deadlines, or class profile -- mentions an application fee, a fee amount, or a fee-waiver process at all. Recorded as required: false because there is nothing to pay and nothing to waive; the site's silence and the 509's certified zero agree, so this is not a case of the school simply failing to mention a charge. LSAC's own CAS and registration fees are separate and are not addressed by California Western's pages.

  • InterviewOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

AN EXPLICIT DENIAL, not a silence -- the distinction matters per docs/CURATION.md. Set off in bold on the Application Components page immediately after the personal-statement instructions: 'PLEASE NOTE: The Admissions Committee does not conduct personal interviews.' So there is no evaluative interview, no interview by invitation, and no interview on request, and the placement makes the school's reasoning clear -- the personal statement is where the committee expects to hear the applicant's voice. The published review factors ('LSAT, GRE, or JD-Next exam scores; Cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA); Rigor of undergraduate coursework; Performance in graduate programs; Letters of recommendation; Personal statements; Addenda; Extracurricular activities; Work experience; Demonstrated skills; Diverse life experiences') contain no interview, consistent with the denial. Campus visits are offered separately and are not part of the evaluation.
