What it costs, how graduates fare

Tuition2025-26

$41,000 full-time

Tuition and the fees the school certifies alongside it — not a full cost of attendance.

Bar passageclass of 2025

54.8%first-time−25.9

80.7% is the average for all ABA-accredited schools’ graduates in the same jurisdictions this school’s graduates sat in · 23 of 42 first-time takers passed

91.5% of the class of 2023 were admitted within two years of graduating

A pass rate on its own says as much about which states a school feeds as about the school, so the ABA’s own like-for-like average is shown with it.

Employmentclass of 2025

23 of 43 (53.5%) in full-time, long-term jobs requiring bar admission

Ten months after graduation · 4 more in JD-advantage jobs · 4 still seeking

The ABA collects employment status and job type only. It collects no salary, so no salary figure comes from this filing.

First-year attrition2024-25

12.0% of the first-year class · 9 students

No law school publishes a graduation rate, so this is not one. It is the students who left in their first year, academic and other, as filed. Transfers out are reported separately and are not counted here.

Not a starting salary.

$33,989 median one year after finishing · $65,332 after four

$107,773 is the national median at four years for the same credential

A College Scorecard median for 2017-18 and 2018-19 completers who received federal aid, measured a fixed number of years after they finished — not what this year’s graduates are being paid, and not a figure the school or the ABA publishes. The ABA collects no salary data at all.

Essays

  • Personal statementRequiredstart by Jun 14, 2027

An original personal statement of 500 words or more describing your professional goals and qualifications.

    Notes & source

THE 500 WORDS ARE A FLOOR, NOT A CEILING -- 'of 500 words or more' -- so no word_limit is recorded. Under docs/CURATION.md a limit needs a ceiling phrase ('no longer than', 'not exceed', 'maximum'); this is the opposite, a published minimum, and converting it into a cap would invert the school's instruction. ASL publishes no upper bound on length anywhere, and no page limit or formatting requirement. The prompt is narrow for its type: two named subjects, 'your professional goals and qualifications', rather than the open invitation most schools print. NO WHY-ASL QUESTION and no required perspective statement is published, so those types are omitted rather than recorded as absent.

  • Optional essayOptionalschool-specificstart by Jun 28, 2027
    Notes & source

AN OPTIONAL ATTACHMENT SLOT WITH FOUR NAMED SUBJECTS, one of them specific to this school: 'Optional submissions may include an applicant's graduate work, diversity statement, connection to the Appalachian region, and non-academic achievements. These can be submitted as attachments to the e-app or emailed directly to the Admissions Office.' The regional tie is the one to notice -- ASL's mission is Appalachian-facing and it invites applicants to address that connection directly, which is the nearest thing the school publishes to a why-us question without being one. 'May include' makes the list illustrative rather than closed, and no length limit, format, or separate prompt is published for any of the four. Recorded as a single optional_essay rather than split into four, and not recorded as a why_x_essay: ASL never asks why you want to attend ASL, it invites a regional connection among other optional material.

  • RésuméRequiredstart by Jun 28, 2027
    Notes & source

A listed requirement for application to the J.D. program: 'Provide a resume covering educational, professional, and volunteer history.' Three content areas are named; no page limit, format, or style guidance is published, so none is recorded.

  • LSAT or GRERequiredstart by May 6, 2027
    Notes & source

LSAT ONLY -- ASL IS ONE OF THE SCHOOLS THAT HAS NOT OPENED A SECOND TEST ROUTE, and it says so affirmatively rather than by omission: 'All applicants are required to take the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test).' The GRE is not mentioned anywhere in the requirements list or the FAQ; under docs/CURATION.md that silence is not itself a denial, but the 'all applicants are required' sentence is a positive statement that leaves no alternative route, which is stronger than silence. The 2025 509 agrees from the other direction: it prints an LSAT row covering all 92 enrollees and no GRE or JD-Next row at all. FIVE-YEAR VALIDITY, MEASURED FROM ENROLLMENT NOT APPLICATION: 'Scores from LSAT testing dates more than 5 years preceding the intended term of enrollment are not considered.' HIGHEST SCORE GOVERNS: 'If an applicant has multiple LSAT scores, the Admissions Committee will consider the highest official score reported', repeated in the FAQ as 'The highest LSAT score will be considered as long as it has not expired.' NO MINIMUM SCORE, answered directly when asked -- FAQ: 'What is your minimum LSAT requirement to apply? Appalachian School of Law conducts a holistic review of each applicant.' WHEN TO SIT IT: 'We recommend taking the LSAT in September or December prior to the application year; however, LSAT scores from later test administration dates may be considered.' ASL's LSAC school code is 5829.

  • Transcripts via LSAC CASRequiredstart by Jun 14, 2027
    Notes & source

CAS IS THE ONLY ROUTE IN: 'the application is accessed only through the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC). Interested candidates must obtain an account through LSAC; all documents supporting the application must be submitted for verification through this same entity which compiles what is known as the Credential Assembly Service (CAS).' A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IS A STATED ACADEMIC CRITERION, not merely assumed: 'A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is the first academic criterion. Applicants must submit all transcripts from each college, university, or high school dual enrollment program attended' -- note that dual-enrollment high school coursework is named explicitly, which is easy to overlook. No minimum GPA is published, and no major is preferred: FAQ, 'Do I need to have a certain major to apply? We invite all majors to apply.' TRANSCRIPTS HAVE A SECOND, LATER DEADLINE AS AN ENROLLMENT CONDITION: 'If the transcript submitted upon application contained work that was still in progress, you will need to submit a final official copy to the Registrar's Office or through LSAC. Complete, official transcripts must be received by November 1 for the fall semester and April 1 for the spring semester. If complete, official transcripts are not received by these dates, grades will be held and the student will not be allowed to register for the following semester.' INTERNATIONAL: 'If a JD applicant has studied for more than one academic year outside the United States or Canada, the applicant may use CAS for transcript evaluation and authentication if required by the law school.' ASL publishes no TOEFL or IELTS requirement on these pages.

  • Letter of recommendation (1 of 2)Requiredstart by Jun 7, 2027
    Notes & source

'ASL requires two letters of recommendation but will accept up to four.' Both numbers are published in one sentence, which is unusually clean -- most schools give one or the other. Delivery is through LSAC: 'Applicants should have letters sent directly to the Law School Admission Council.' WHO SHOULD WRITE, WITH AN EXPLICIT DISQUALIFICATION: 'We look for the authors to be direct supervisors, former professors, e.g., from a professional person with direct, anecdotal evidence of the applicant's ability to succeed in law school. Letters from friends, family, or someone without personal knowledge of the applicant are disregarded.' Worth reading as written -- a letter from the wrong author is not merely weak here, the school says it is disregarded, so a required slot filled by a family friend is effectively a missing letter.

Administrative

  • Application feeOptionalat submission
    Notes & source

THERE IS NO APPLICATION FEE, stated plainly on the Apply Now page -- 'There is no application fee, but the application is accessed only through the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC)' -- and repeated as a call to action: 'Apply for free on the LSAC website: www.LSAC.org'. The school's own 2025 509 certifies the same thing from the regulatory side: 'Application fee 0'. Site and filing agree, which is not always the case at these schools. No waiver process is published because there is nothing to waive; LSAC's own CAS and report fees are separate and ASL does not address them. NOT AN APPLICATION FEE, BUT THE FIRST REAL MONEY IN THE PROCESS: a $500 seat deposit after admission, payable in two parts -- FAQ: 'Seat deposit due dates are listed in applicants' acceptance packets. The total $500 deposit may be split into two payments of $200 and $300. These deposits are nonrefundable.' The payment page offers $200, $300 and $500 buttons, matching that split.
